Top 5 Baby Gear Must-Haves

One can feel overwhelmed with the amount of "baggage" that a new baby brings to your house. There are so many neat and fun gadgets but contrary to what media tells you, you don't have to have it all. Here is a list of essential baby gear that is a must, the rest is just fluff:

1. Car Seat - Unless you want to be a recluse and not go anywhere, this is a MUST. There are two types that are helpful to evaluate. Although it is more costly to get 2 car seats, I personally think the advantages of having an infant carrier out way the additional cost.
i. Infant Carrier
- Birth to 30 pounds or 20 inches; rear-facing only
- Can carry outside of car, beneficial when baby sleeps to take in and out of vehicle
ii. Convertible car seat
- Converts to forward facing when child meets required specifications.
- Stays in vehicle, bulky compared to infant carrier

2. Baby Bed - there are many options out there from a crib, bassinet, Moses' basket, etc.... If you are looking for a cost effective purchase, the Pack-n-play featuring a bassinet option gives wonderful versatility. This doubles as a travel bed, play area, and a bassinet.

3. Baby Carrier - bouncers, swings, they are all very nice, but your baby wants you!! Unfortunately there are other tasks that call your name, so I have deemed a carrier/sling a must have for new mothers. Baby feels comfortable and close to you and you have 2 hand s to complete your other tasks. After trying various slings and baby carriers, the Ergo baby carrier provided the most comfort for baby and me.

4. Breast pump- If you will be working, obviously you will want to invest in a good quality breast pump that last through the rigors. If you plan on staying home the majority of the time with your little one, I suggest that you buy a simple manual pump. I thought I would pump a lot, but after I had my little one I preferred to nurse him. I was very glad that I did not spend money on a high dollar pump. If however you find that you do prefer to pump, then you can invest in a pump knowing that you are making a good investment.

5. Swing - Not every baby likes these, but the vast majority do. Investing in a swing proves helpful at night and during the day. There are many options out there, but I recommend one that swings forward and side to side. My little guy did not like the regular swing, but loved the side to side motion. When he was sick the swing kept him in an upright position to ease breathing.
