Almost everybody understands that babies are sweet and cuddly. They wear sweet and funny looking outfits. At what other stage in life can a person wear a t-shirt that says "Daddy's Princess" without getting funny looks? Most people think that there isn't much to being a baby. These same people seem to think that, except for an inability to communicate properly, babies are not that much different from adults. Babies are actually quite complex creatures who have very specific needs. Here are some facts about babies that might be new to you.
Did you know that babies are not good at perceiving the differences in colors very well? Babies are born with eyes that are not completely finished yet and only partially formed synapses between the eyes and the brain. This is why the very best colors that you can use for a baby's room or toys are bright primary colors. You should focus the color scheme for your baby on bright reds and blues and greens or even on black and white. In the eyes of a baby, a lot of pastel colors look pretty much the same.

This is often the motivation behind a baby's toy preferences. So that means that all of those black and white mobiles that you scoff at in stores for being too "artsy" are actually better for your baby's developing eyes than the pastel one you were probably thinking of getting!
Most babies have the ability to recognize different types of music before they are born. By the time a woman is 34 weeks into her pregnancy the unborn baby can identify different sounding songs. This means that over a month before the baby is due, they develop an ear for music! Some women say that they will sometimes feel their babies moving to the rhythm of some music. While most doctors recommend against consuming mercury while a woman is pregnant, eating non mercury forms of fish can be quite healthy. Eating salmon while you are pregnant is good because salmon is chock full of healthy nutrients for you and your baby and it does not contain mercury the way other types of fish do. Some think if a woman eats fish while she is pregnant that she will improve her baby's brain function and that her child will develop better communication skills than a baby born to a mother who did not consume fish while she was pregnant. Of course this has yet to be scientifically proven so, if you do not particularly like salmon, don't lose sleep over this.
There are all sorts of interesting facts about babies that are not commonly known. Ironically, the more information an adult has on a subject the more patience he or she usually has for it when faced with it.
