What is Normal Child Speech Development?

It is always exciting when your child begins to communicate using words. Naturally the words are initially unclear and an approximation of the real word. For instance 'do' might be 'go' and 'doddy' might be 'doggy'. As children acquire more words and begin to put words together to formulate little sentences, usually occurring from 18 months, parent often wonder what is the approximate age that sounds develop. What is normal speech development for children?

The earliest sounds that children produce accurately are the sounds we typically associate with babbling. These sounds include 'm, p, b, w, n, t, d'. These sounds are easily made by the child putting their lips together and putting their tongue behind their teeth. The lip sounds are often the first to develop as your baby can see you produce those sounds and imitates your mouth movements.

Typically certain sounds develop before others. The following is the average age at which the speech sound listed below is accurate 75% of the time in a child's speech.

3 years: h, j, w, m, n, ng, p, k, t, b, g, d, z

3 years 6 months: f

4 years: l, sh, ch

5 years: r

6 years: v

7 years 6 months: th soft

8 years: th hard

Another indicator of if a child's speech is developing normally is to determine how clearly the child is understood by their parents. By 18 months of age a child's speech is intelligible 25% of the time, by 24 months a child's speech is intelligible 50 - 75 % of the time and then by 3 years of age a child's speech should be understood 75-100% of the time. By 3 years a child should also be easily understood by an unfamiliar adult most of the time. Not all sounds are said correctly, but the child can be understood. Their speech is child-like not adult-like.

There is an old old saying that "music doth soothe the savage beast". Now don't get all upset, I'm not saying your baby is a savage beast, heaven forbid! The point is that music is so beneficial to humans and animals alike. From the beginning of human kind it would be safe to say that one of the first things they ever did was to have some form of music.

The normal household sounds are something that your baby will relate to as a normal "hum" of activity is something they will grow into and they will accept readily.

This is a great time for you to explore all the types of music and observe what the effect is on your baby. Your baby will let you know in his or her own subtle way what is and isn't pleasing. The same music that's helping your baby get to sleep can help soothe your own nerves and provide a wonderful time of bonding and restfulness for you and your baby together.

Preparing The Way For Little Brother/Sister

Congratulations on the arrival of your new baby! Do you have another baby at home, who may not be feeling the same excitement? I'll share with you a few ideas that will hopefully help make the new arrival a happy occasion for the whole family.

It's natural for siblings to express to express their fears. Their world as they have always known it is going to change. Many times they will exhibit some sign of regression. But with your love and attention, hopefully you can keep the regression down to a minimum.

Talk to your child about what's going to happen, how their environment is going to change, and what they can expect. It's very important not to mislead them and to tell them the truth. Let them know that even though things are changing, that your love for them will never change.

When you are talking about the baby, and their role in the baby's life, always reinforce it as their little brother or sister, not Mom's baby.

Make your child feel needed. Let them know you need them now more than ever. They can help in the preparations - from choosing names, to decorating the nursery.

The least you can change your child's routine, the better. If there's any major changes to be made, like moving into a new room - do all of those changes, if possible, before the baby arrives.

Reinforce the role of the sibling. Let them know how important their role is, to you and their new brother or sister. Brag on how much help they will be to you both.

When you bring the baby home, try not to walk in holding the baby. Put the baby in the carrier, stroller, or let someone else carry the baby in.

Let your older child set the pace of how much interaction he wants to have with the new baby, and how quickly. If he wants to hold her, set him in a secure place, and teach him how to hold his newborn brother or sister. Tell him how good of a job he's doing. Of course you have to teach your child safety around his new brother or sister, but do so in a gentle voice, not in a lecture tone.

Remind excited visitors to pay attention to the sibling as well. You don't want him to feel like now that the baby is here, no one cares about him anymore. Not only will that cause your older child to feel unwanted, it could also cause anger toward his new brother/sister.

Whatever you or others do and say, do not compare them to each other. By doing so, you can decrease your child's sense of self-worth and self-esteem, which can cause unfavorable emotions toward himself and his new brother/sister.

Make sure you set aside alone time - where it's just you and him. This would be a great time to read books about being a new brother and having a new baby in the home.

Above all, let him express his emotions, without getting on to him. Let him know it's okay to feel the way he does and help him work through his feelings. If you are concerned and think your child has unhealthy feelings, please talk to a professional. They can give you a lot of advice and different tools to work with to make the transition of another child easier on you and them.

We as parents need to take charge and protect our children from these dangerous chemicals.

What can we do? When purchasing toys, make sure they are organic. There are many organic toys that babies may chew on that will stimulate the mind, allow them to teeth on and are completely harmless. The cotton, wool, stuffing and dyes are organic or non toxic and the wood is a hardwood. There are toys from apples to zebras and everything in between. Your baby doesn't need a plastic toy that will poison her, just go organic.

The toddler years are a great time to introduce art. Creative juices are running rampant! Bring some fun into play by providing simple art materials. You can cut down on the clean up after by covering the child in a large apron or art smock, protecting the area with a drop cloth such as an old shower curtain and containing the art space with a large cookie sheet.

A few magazines on an old sheet or shower curtain and let them go! As they get better at it you can show them how to tear around pictures they might want to keep. Otherwise random tearing is just as much fun. When the activity is over, just pick up the sheet and shake it into a trash bag! Lots of fun, quick clean up.

You may be wondering, what's the connection? The problem is that practically all infant thrush treatments, both natural and pharmaceutical, aim at killing the yeast which is present. It's never too early to start baby-proofing. Before the baby arrives is the ideal time to start considering what may be a hazard in your home. The nursery is especially important since your baby will be spending lots of time there. Keep baby-proofing in mind when you decorate your nursery. Furniture anchors and electrical outlet covers are very important and can be easily installed when you decorate the room.

Babies grow and develop so quickly. If you wait until you see a need for baby-proofing, then it can sometimes be too late. New parents especially may not realize how curious and creative a new baby can be. Before you know it, your little one will be putting everything in his or her mouth. The general rule is, if it fits down a toilet paper tube, it can fit down a child's throat. Any small items should be kept out of reach and where a toddler or child can't climb to get to it. Keep lamps, heaters and other burn hazards well out of reach. Secure these items so that they can't be pulled off of a shelf or dresser by the cord. If your heating vents are located on the floor, keep in mind that they can become very hot during the winter. Replace metal vents with plastic ones or place a physical barrier that your child won't be able to get past in the way of the vent. Take precautions if there is a radiator or portable heater in the nursery as well. You may end up putting a baby gate all the way around the radiator or heater.

Stuffed animals, blankets and clothing pulled from drawers are the number one fire hazard in a child's room. Your gates should be high enough that a child can't throw flammable items near a heat source. Don't forget that incandescent light bulbs can be very hot and start fires as well. Consider fluorescent light bulbs for lamps in a child's room. Keep baby blankets, stuffed toys and clothing out of your child's reach. If you keep them in the crib, make sure that they are well out of the child's reach from the outside. Install child locks on dresser drawers and keep as many clothes as possible put away in the closet on childrens clothes hangers. Prepare early and you'll be confident of your child's safety when he or she arrives.

In extremely rare cases these strawberry marks trap some of the blood cells (platelets) that assist in preventing bleeding problems. In such cases doctors will administer medicines (steroids). Virtually all strawberry marks will disappear if left alone. Large persistent ones can be surgically removed after the child is older than 6 years.

Port wine stains are large purple marks that occur in about 3 in 1,000 babies. They are a cosmetic problem if they appear on the face. There are currently no good methods for removing these stains. X rays are harmful and must be avoided. Cosmetics may be used to cover these spots.

If a port wine stain covers an entire eyelid, there may be an associated problem with seizures, which will require medical help.

Finally, infants may have brown or black hairy or non hairy moles. More than 2% of white babies and 20% of African American babies have these moles. They do not disappear. Because there is a risk of large moles developing into cancer, many doctors recommend their removal as soon after birth. You should discuss the problem with your doctor.

When faced with the idea of potty training many parents do not know when or how to begin. Thinking about starting to potty train your child can be a daunting experience.

When should you start is one of the most questions parents ask.

My answer is at whatever age you want to from birth onwards.

There are advantages and disadvantages to commencing at whatever age you choose and these are listed to help you make a decision that suits you, your family and your child or baby.

Before aged 1

Advantages

The parent and child bond is enhance through learning how to communicate from very early in his life You saves time and money Start early before he is mobile and he will be more willing to sit on his potty He will learn how to communicate more non-verbally. He does not have to unlearn the lessons of using a diaper for his bodily functions
Disadvantages

You need to have to have a more regulated schedule He needs more input from his parents and care givers You have to learn to understand his non-verbal communication It will take longer It is more difficult to find tiny underpants and knickers Other parents will criticize you and try and dissuade you
Aged 12 to 24 month

Advantages

You can save 0's You help the environment If you can start before he is mobile, he will be more willing to sit still on his potty He will learn how to communicate more with verbal and non-verbal messages earlier He has less time that he has to unlearn the lesson he was taught about using his diaper for his bodily functions
Disadvantages

Disadvantages

He has to unlearn the lessons of using a diaper for his bodily functions which he has been allowed to do for a much longer time It is more expensive; it could cost you 00's more just for diapers. He may be more resistant to starting as he is so used to performing in his diapers. It can become more of a battle from start right through to completion
Once you make a decision to start potty training your child then stick to that date.
