Many parents pierce their baby's ears when they are still babies so they won't have to remember the pain later. Is this a good idea and should you pierce your baby's ears? If you live in the Western world, it's common for females to have pierced ears. In fact, today you will be more hard pressed to find a girl without her ears pierced at least once than to find those who have them.
With it being such commonplace for little girls to get their ears pierced, many parents are opting to do it when they are babies. The reasoning behind this is that it will only hurt for a little bit and the baby won't remember it when she is older anyway.
Non Convertible Crib
I chose not to pierce the ears of my baby girls for several reasons. First, I'm not against the practice of piercing. In fact, although I no longer wear jewelry in all of them, I have had over 26 body piercings. I chose not to have my daughters' (or sons') ears pierced as babies for different reasons.
Here is my thought process:
o A baby can't speak for herself and say whether or not she wants it done
o If she doesn't want them when she's older, the holes don't always grow back
o Traditional "ear guns" used for piercing are dangerous, cause trauma and increase risk infection
o Most professional body piercers won't pierce babies
o Piercing your baby can lead your daughter to believe she has to have pierced ears even if she may not want them
This is why I made the decision not to pierce my baby's ears. My oldest daughter is now almost nine years old and although most of her friends have pierced ears, she hasn't wanted it done. She did ask once why she couldn't wear earrings like me and I explained that they have to go through a hole in your ear.
If she decides one day that she wants it done, I think she's old enough for me to let her.
However, I won't go to Wal-Mart or one of those little piercing huts in the mall who do it with a gun. Instead, I will take her to a professional body piercing shop and have it done by a professional with a needle and professional equipment. This greatly lowers the trauma and risk of infection with getting the piercing. It's also less painful (trust me; I've had it both ways).
